moving redcurrants
« on: January 16, 2004, 17:22:13 »
I have a couple of redcurrant bushes that I bought last year and planted in my garden- didn't get any fruit as the birds picked all the buds off (I actually saw them doing this but naively thought they were eating off the blackfly..only months later when no fruit appeared did I realise what had happened !  :-[
I need to move them now and wondered whether they are likely to object to this?

Also, is it too late to take some gooseberry cuttings? I know I should I have done it in Nov.
thanks

Hi rdak

As long as there is no frost in the soil you can move those redcurrants now.

The gooseberries?-  take some of the lower branches and cover them with soil, use a brick or whatever to hold them in place. They will root easily and you can cut them off and replant the following season, or even this Autumn-my mind is not yet ready to call it this year yet.

Stephan.

thanks Stephan.
I can't do that with the gooseberry, as it's in a large pot.
I have some of that rooting gel- maybe it I cut some new wood off and try that way..?

rdak-you are not thinking-put another pot/pots next to the one with the gooseberry-sorry not trying to be a clever pants. There is no way I would would want you to take a cutting at this time of year.

Cutings will work but layering is so much more reliable.

Grief I feel like I am being a bully/know it all-forgive me.

thanks
