Green Manure what do you use
« on: September 08, 2012, 07:23:51 »
I am currently growing mustard and lupins (a friend brought them back from poland).  I have vetch and field beans bought cheap in Wyevale.  They also had horseradish, rather wary incase I miss digging some in, has anyone tried it?

What about parsnip, I have loads of seeds.

Hope to source some wheat but no one has spilled any around here this year.

I had hoped to have saved rye/wheat seeds but the voles ate it.

Been told to be wary of asian mustard seed from supermarket might harbour bugs.

I've used vetch and I think some sort of mixture. Can't remember anymore!

I'd be a bit wary of horseradish too!  ;D

Horseradish is a terrible thing to get rid of. If I ever grow it again, it's going to be in a container, raised above ground level so it can't escape through the drainage holes.

We use phacelia, tried alfalfa but that wasn't too good. Now trying red clover and have mustard to try next year. Used rye last year but we found it difficult to incorporate it. I love phacelia , we leave some for the bees

I haven't grown the "Horseradish" green manure but looking at the packets I think it is just a field radish...

I found rye good when I dug it in onto about 6 inches high, once it turned to straw it seems rather persistant.
It does seem to keep down the weeds but things planted where had been seemed to take a long time to establish.

What do people think about parsnip I have loads of seeds.

I guess my worry with parsnips would be giving carrot diseases a place to overwinter, but at this time of year they should dodge the bullet even if they don't get very big...

I tend to sow last of it when the first frost cuts down the beans and courgettes/pumpkins.  There are normally a few nice enough days after that to get it started.   So mid to end of October.   It grows off and on all winter.  Actually now is the best time.   The winter wheat fields are already turning green round here, they sow it soon after the rape has been harvested, and the rape goes in the wheat fields.
