Hi all
Dug up the last of my spuds today as they say its going to be getting wetter, and not much slug damage to them was nice to see but when prepping them for dinner i was cutting the large ones in half to find they were hollow not rotten??
Any one know what has caused this? new one on me..
Thanks Steve.

I do not know what causes it but I have had it too in the past.
I would suggest that it is due to fluctuations in water/ warmth and growing conditions- not that we have had much like that to contend with recently ;)

Hollow heart. I only know because I asked this question last week! Too much rain making them grow too fast, I think in my case. Isn't it annoying though....

It's a condition called hollow heart and is caused by over-watering (rain), quite common this year. Causes the spuds to over-grow, that's why only large ones are affected, ie because they have grown too fast.

Thanks for asking the question and the answers. I was blaming the slugs although they must be responsible for some damage. Disappointing year for our spuds :'(
