OPEN DAY on allotments
« on: June 03, 2014, 22:36:41 »
How many of you have an OPENDAY on your allotment site for the purpose of fund raising.

Our allotment on Rosamond site Leicester started our open day to celebrate  the allotment's 80th birthday. We had such a good response of the public turning up so we decided to have an openday every year in August. We have several stalls -selling our own produce, home made cakes, jams and pickle, bric-a.brac, tea hut, stocks, fertilizers, plants, books, secondhand tool stall, tombola, raffels, and prizes for the best plots and much improved new comer plot.

Queens Road Allotments, also in Leicester.

We have an annual open day with a little fund raising, but the main purpose of our open days are to enable our neighbours in the area to visit our site, and as a way of thanking them for all the support they give us whenever someone tries to get planning permission to build on an allotment.
The allotments are privately owned and we are often under threat of Builders Blight.

Our allotment site is council owned land but we have our own management committee. Council wont give us any money as they say due to budget cuts. We had to fund raise for a new composting toilet although they offered us a toilet if we paid for installation. They also cut back on the skips we used to get yearly.

Ours is sometimes open when there is a local open gardens day.  Not many people come, but we sometimes pick up a new person who wants a plot.
