Vietnamese Coriander cutting wanted please
« on: March 28, 2012, 19:37:45 »
I lost my plants last year and the seed I've sown doesn't look to be germinating  :'(
I wondered if anyone has a plant they could spare a cutting or two from, I'd be very happy as I'm not sure where to get another plant from? I've got lots I can offer to swap in return, different varieties of sweet corn, peas, beans, tomatoes, tps, yacon etc.

It is gorgeous isn't it :) Thanks for your kind offer which I may take you up on if I get totally stuck. I haven' t found anywhere round here with some and I think if no one has a stem spare to swap I'll perhaps try a google search and see if I can track one down on line.

Sorry missed this, it tastes kind of like a spicy corriander with a bit of heat, very good in dishes I think  :)

Thank you G'life your cuttings have gone on to make lovely plants in super quick time, yumm  ;D

I saw a French chef on TV use it to flavour cooked berry fruits if anyone wants to experiment with it. I use it in Asian soups/broths and sometimes in stir fries. It grows well in damp composts, even in jars of water alone and strikes roots easily but I always lose it over winter.

Yes..I tend to loose it too..but its usually always my fault... ::) VC is easy to over winter , my fault is forgetting half of my plants and they get either left into wrong temps/condtions or some just escape my attention.. ::)
Now on I just have to take more notice as the herb nursery I buy VC and other bits from has changed owners and sounds like the new owners won't keep the bits I like going.. ::)

I love this herb too and thought that I'd lost mine over winter but left what looked like the dead plant in situ (out of laziness mostly!!).

About 2 months ago it looked like it was sprouting new growth and although the tiny leaves took about a month and a half to get any bigger than half a cm or so I now have lots of new growth and the plant is starting to bush out a bit.

My point is I don't know where people live or what the climates are like but maybe it's worth mulching around the plant in winter...

Liz

are you lot all growing yours out or indoors? (if out, don't the slugs like it? too much as my thai basil gets obliterated all the time). i manage to get a cutting from a nice owner from a garden open day i went to the other week, and it's potted up and encased in a clear bag over it. how long do you think it'll root? ;D

Usually I keep mine outside but still in pot..this year it has stayed strickly in GH..not very 'Vienamese' weather out there.. ::) Usually slugs to bother it much..but this year with amount of thugs on rampage..who knows.
I would not be surprised if you cutting is already rooted..they do so very quickly and not even bag cover needed, I usually just poke piece on any 'old' compost and job done.

I've one planted in the tall growing part of my herb bed, it's done well despite the lack of sunshine. Slugs and snails don't seem to be bother it, they are preferring the Vietnamese Mint. The two plants in the greenhouse will be transferred to the polytunnel once I can reach them! I'll plant one in the border, which in a average year should overwinter here ok, as lizo85 suggests it's worth giving a mulch or a bit of fleece to help protect. Though if we have the cold temperatures of the last couple of years then probably not. The remaining one will be movable for where there is space. I'll do some late cuttings which usually do well over winter ready for next year, just remembering is the thing!

A sprig will definitely root in a jar of water.
