What's growing in your pumpkin patch?
« on: June 05, 2012, 13:46:32 »
From last year's crop I’ve one Australian blue left and a half of a Sibley (thanks to Jeannine for seeds of this one) which got me thinking about what I’ve sown this year;

Australian Blue
Autumn Crown F1
Blue Ballet
Bon Bon
Golden Nugget
Green Hokkaido
Japanese pumpkin
Little Gem
Long Island Cheese
Sibley
Sweet Dumping
Uncle David’s Dakota Dessert

I'm cheating a little as mine are still all in pots but I’m hoping to plant them out very soon  ;D I wondered what squash, pumpkins everyone else are growing this season?

I've got
- Uchiki kuri (orange onion type)
- Marina di Chioggia (big dark green)
- Galeux d'Eysines (peach coloured with fragrant flesh)
- One Delicata - I don't seem to get good germination from delicata.

Also some Zucchetta Rugosa Friulana - yellow warty courgettes.

I'm sticking to tried and tested this year. So far they're looking good - wind has been fairly warm and not too strong, so they're leaves aren't tattered  :)

I have Japanese pumpkin.AKA Japs direct from OZ where they are very popular.

Not growing much this year, we are eating them less and less so going for mostly littles, and I haven`t even started them yet.
Probably going to do.
Sweet Dumpling
Rolet
Magda summer squash..
Delicata

and then I lose my cool and start looking at the biggies  ;D ;D

I guess I am a lost cause.

I like Butternuts so am growing the Winter, Hunter and Butterbush varieties. Also Red Kuri, Festival, Harlequin and Crown Prince - just one of each. I sowed three other varieties which didn't germinate - just as well! Although it looks as though the slugs/snails have done for one of the Butternuts all the others are growing apace so am hoping for a good harvest after last year's poor showing.

I was just about to ask how many plants altogether you folk are growing..but Tricial already mentioned hers.. ;D
I'm growing 23 squashes though now that I've discovered that my 'calculations' for space for sweetcorn did go wrong and I've got some spare ground..I might dig into seed box and see if I have any bush type squashes more that I could still sow.. ;D

I don't have a patch, I just let them run amok over the potato patch :)
Red Kuri, I sowed Queensland Blue but not sure it has worked. Waltham Butternuts. a swap butternut, I also sowed Pink Banana and Marina di Choggia but not sure they have worked either  :-\
Oh and a Golden Nugget, that seems to be up.
2012 - Snow in February, non-stop rain till July. Blight and rot are rife. Thieving voles cause strife. But first runner beans and lots of greens. Follow an English allotment in urban France: http://roos-and-camembert.blogspot.com

I'll have a count up tomorrow, though I'm not sure I have space for them all  ;D I think one or two may end up in the fruit cage  :P

I've just been sorting out, ready to plant out...
1 Triamble, 2 Etampes, 3 Queensland blue, 2 Crown Prince, 3 Choggia, 2 Muscade, 4 Veg Spag., 5 Shark's Fin......
Then it gets silly... 3 green courgettes, 3 Gold Rush, 5 Fruliani and 7 Striata....
Two butternut are already in the poly border....
Something will have to join the 3 Atlantic Giant on the discard pile...  :-[

Nooooooo! David - don't discard - Freecycle them. That's how I get rid of any I don't have room for. There are always eager takers.

Tricia
(btw The last of the friulana seeds you sent me three years ago germinated and is growing well protected by a circle of copper netting tape!)

I'm not into Freecycle... I'll ask Deb P she may be...
Would you like some more (seeds).... I clearly have no germination problems with the packet...  :-X

I'd love a few David - to keep me going. I'm particularly fond of the Friulana and have had a great harvest each year. So thanks for the offer. Do you still have my addy?

If I remember rightly: Uchiki Kuri, Crown Prince, Marina di chioggia, lunga di napoli, black futsu, snowman, and Kikuza (trying it in a hoop cloche just to see what happens).  There may be another one or two that I can't remember.  I did sow Kakai, but it never germinated so needs a re-sow.  I also have a packet of New england pie somewhere...
