Some varieties such as the sutton suggest sowing June which has only just finished. If you have spare seed and spare space, if it produces little it will improve the soil.
I grew some masterpiece longpod very late the first year I had a lottie to help clear soil of couch since it is easy to hoe between plants, and breaks up soil well, actually had a good crop but that was a bonus. I was expecting just to dig them in. It was my own saved seeds so no financial loss.
