Problem with transplanting cucumbers
« on: May 16, 2012, 16:13:53 »
I transplanted 4 cucumbers from their pots in to 2 different greenhouses,  All four have died, on one of them it looked like the roots just hadnt grown and the base rotted!

I have more to go in and have been given some more

What am i doing wrong and how can i stop this from happening in the future?

When you transplant cucumbers you dont sink them into the compost you plant them on the top of a mound to avoid stem rot. so you water below the stem.

When you wake up on a morning say "good morning world" and be grateful

I have 3 small transplants and placed them on mounds in pots. I only gave a little water in the surrounding moat and they are in at night and out (sheltered) by day. 6 days on and so far so good, I like the breeze to make them quiver

I learnt the hard way, last year

Mmm, sounds like wet to me, too. I plant mine with a lower level of soil all around the pot and only water from the bottom and only let them get slightly moist

I always think that its all about temperature with transplanting them.

Last year the ones i transplanted early during a warm spell in may romped away and were fine, the ones i planted in june which was cold rotted off.

Im holding on to mine in the warm gh until the overnight temps warm up. Just pot them on and wait if you arent sure.

Good luck
