^^ thank you very much all, half price veg seeds and the 15% discount code worked and I got a nice collection for under a tenner.

Including the honey bee wildflower mix that SamLouise drew attention to  :)

I ordered but was billed at the full price on my invoice even though the pricing as adding to the basket was at 50%.   I've emailed T&M for a 50% refund so will see what happens.   ???

^^ some of their fancy seeds are only available direct from themselves - these are the ones I buy.    Everything else I try to get from Wyevales 50p sale.

I bought some fancy onion seeds, tomatoes, sweetcorn, peas and the honey bee mix flower seeds which were full price - a whopping 99p.

But their veg collections can be good value because they sell you about 10 packs of different seeds, all good varieties with a bit of a discount, and then half price.  But they can sell out quick.

For instance, this "easy grow veg collection" 10 packets of seed including Sungold tomatoes, White Lady runners and Cobra french beans (yum yum) would be 4.99 plus the P&P.

Not bad really.

Hm - how long do seeds keep?

In my experience some keep much longer than you say Cam.  But there is a large difference between well-stored home saved seeds and commercial seeds.  Commercial seeds tell you when they were packed or when to sow them by, but not actually when they were harvested or what happened then.  At packing time they were germination tested and passed guidelines - at that time, not at the time they were bought or even worse at the time they had spent several months cycling hot, cold, damp and dry on a seed rack in a garden centre.

Lettuce seed that got too warm does not sprout, but can be revived by placing inside an airtight jar and putting into the fridge for a day.  Always worth trying.  Beans usually sprout well after six years and there should be some germination after 8 years, up to ten is worth trying.  Peas are nearly as long lived.  Six year old pea seeds stored reasonably well indoors should germinate near 100 percent.  Tomatoes at 8 years, squash at 8, always provided that they were actually fresh at the time.  Commercial seeds might have been packed at 5 years old and then only last another 2 or 3 or they might be really fresh and last for much longer.

On the other hand onions at 4 and carrots at 3 years old might be pushing it for commercial seeds.  Worth a try, but I would not expect full germination from a commercial packet.  However foil packets are better at preserving viability.

If in doubt, try to sprout any seed.  I recently had good germination from a ten year old packet of radish seeds and from 12 year old tomato seeds.  The radish was commercial and in foil, the tomato seed was home saved.

Hope you don't mind me slightly contradicting you Cam  :)

Good bargain hunting everyone  ;D

I know the feeling but mine hasn't got a lid... It's a rectangular tray full of seed packs grouped alphabetically and pegged together... then there's a small box of ones I'm sowing next and an overflow container with large packs of beans and....

and I could really do with some more wallflower seeds as well as a pack of coleus seeds as I love the leaf colours and they grow indoors as well as out and....

I might just take a look to see how much they are and what they've got.  ;)  ;D
