Asparagus
« on: May 05, 2012, 20:41:01 »
Hi,
I have aquired an established asparagus root from a vacant plot and planted it in a muck trough.
It is growing very well at the moment and my question is,can i harvest it this year due to being an old root or do i still need to leave it to go to seed this season?

You will only get a few spears from one plant and seeing that it is old then pick a few and savour them.. If you like them I'd get more crowns to grow..

I would leave them to grow on, and plant new crowns.

Can't you split a crown then?

Never heard of splitting asparagus successfully... they're notorious for not liking any damage to the roots.... grow some up from seed if you can wait 3 years for a crop or get soem mroe roots and save a year....

We used to split crowns in Zimbabwe where we grew loads and gave away loads as well.  leave them till they die down and are dormant before splitting them..
