... Seen any slimy going-on in your pond or surrounding ditches? Any frogs sitting quietly in the lounge keeping themselves to themselves?

I haven't seen anything here in North Wales, but I have been known to miss much. .. And often ;)

mines been making a racket for a couple of days/nights now n i havent thought to check for eggs i think they spawn when its a full moon i might be wrong

Good thinking Brown Thumb, and here's me, all the while studying the actual Moon thing trying to understand this planting by Moons-Cycle stuff, so I can apply it to my allotment. So far though, fair doos, by following the Moon-Guide every seed I have planted in the heat, light, and moisture-controlled environment, has sprouted.
You can't knock that. ;D

Still no Frog activity though.... C'mon Frogs.

Interestingly, and I cannot for the life of me think why this should be. But humans, us, (just in case :P .... Well you never know ;)).... We cannot smell water.
There. I said it would be interesting. And it is when you think about it. No?
Most other creatures can recognise the smell of water, but at some point in our past the ability to smell water must have become less important to our survival than other things.
Things like, oh I dunno. Recognising yellow snow and knowing, without smelling it, that it would not be a good idea to eat it.

So that's that particular life-question answered then. 8)

Not even a croak from the pond yet though......

Our little pond is bubbling with tadpole soup and has been for a week now.
It's full of frogs :)

i have toads in mine at the moment no frogs one little toad might be a mixed little frog is having a piggie back on the large ones back (three times the size lol)so they may be doing their bit for the toady population

Nothing again this year,I doubt there is a frog anywhere near either. It`s been about 10 years now since our village was infested with grass snakes and the frogs/toads have never established again :(

Yep - two clumps of frog spawn and one shortish length of toad spawn.

Last year the goldfish ate the lot! Maybe I should start feeding the fish early to deter them? - they are swimming near the surface already.

yes lots of frogsong and orgies ( one dead one see wildlife thread) and now lots of spawn. there is only one sorry clump of weed to attach it too and the garden is a shady one but the frogs seem to like it. I am just north of bristol

It looks like they are starting to get to it though. You folks' reports are widely spaced.
Maybe they just don't like me. Wouldn't be the first time I've been turned down flat by something with starey eyes and a croaky voice. :-[

on another thread, i wrote about my awful discovery of finding a dead fat frog in my pond the other week (was so scared by it, i had to leave the lotti! :o) Since then, I've been wondering if frogs are territorial or not, as this one would of 'claimed' this pond as theirs and potentially spawn in it this yr (went in last summer). do you think there is still a chance for other frogs to use it now that it's free? I've not noticed other frogs nearby. there is a smaller pond but that's at the top of the slope but that usually has much smaller frog/lets.

oh, and btw, the cause of the death may be due to drowning. what i didn't notice at the time was this 2nd hand rigid pond (4' x 3.5' ish) had perforated holes about 6" from the lip of the rim. this meant that the water level was quite low, and that the frog didn't have a fighting chance to get out. as i didn't install the pond myself and got my friend to do it, i hadn't anticipicated this tragic scenario from happening.

i've since added a ramp for any wildlife to climb out with sunken bricks in one corner. hopefully that'll be more frog-friendly for any visitors...

I usually have toads first and then frogs. Haven't seen any frogs yet but I think that they are around.

Sadly like a couple of years ago all my taddies have gone :o :o :o
I thought the pond was "sour" but I think not.
A lottie friend said perhaps it was overnight temperatures but there is no evidence of dead tadpoles.
I had a poke around but disturbed some toadspawn so thought I'd better leave it.
Have any of you any thoughts/experience of this ?
We still seem to have a healthy frog population in the garden,something the OH doesn't thank me for-he hates 'em ;D ;D ;D

The spawn in my pond didn't last long - the goldfish ate the lot within a week!
