Something snacking on onions!
« on: March 13, 2005, 19:33:07 »
Having sorted out my seed potato crisis, thank you all, I went down to the lottie and discovered half my onions had had their shoots nipped off and left on the ground! The vermin hadn't even had the decency to eat them. :o I've planted my onions in the autumn for three seasons and have never had any problems, who is the culprit and how can I apprehend him/her/it?! :-\

Could try netting them over. The only trouble I have had in the past is with birds pulling them out of the ground. I have had spring bulbs nibbled by the birds but I would have thiught onions would not be to their taste? :o

Hmmm - hope I'm wrong, but the only time my onions had that kind of damage (a bit later in the year) it was definitely two legged him/her's?

Good luck - Gavin

My husband said I'd planted my onion sets upside down but then someone came on here and stuck up for me saying that it was probably the birds that had done it.  Apparently they like a nibble so I've covered mine with mesh (tightly secured so as not to harm the birdies).  None pinched by birds but some have rotted
I came, I saw, I composted

the slugs ate ours last year - to the extent that the green stalk either had lots of holes in, or had been sheared off completely - every time we went to the lottie we were picking slugs off - I thought the strong oniony taste was supposed to put them off
- they havent attacked wintering onions so far - phew
