Winter Whitefly
« on: December 15, 2011, 12:04:21 »
My poor brassicas are totally infested with whitefly still - the tops of the kale plants are relatively free, because I took off all the lower leaves and that stopped the little beasts that were breeding on them from climbing the stem, but I assume PSB and other flowering brassicas need a reasonable percentage of leaf support to continue to produce florets, so I'm loth to try the same tack there.

As frosts only seem to slow the varmints down, and washing up liquid sprays are chancy in winter (given that frosts don't work against the flies but probably would wreak havoc if I sprayed plants now and then the spray froze) does anybody have any suggestions for winter whitefly deterrents?

They can make spectacular clouds, but I've never noticed that they bothered the brassicas much.
