roofing felt measurments
« on: November 13, 2011, 14:27:16 »
The roof of my shed needs recovering.  Can anyone tell me how many rolls of felting I need?   I am looking at Homebase where the rolls are 8x1 metre.

One roll will be enough to do the job, one strip either side starting at the bottom and a strip over the ridge to lap on either side. :)

Don't tack through the roof or water will get through the tack holes. If you have to overlap use the special adhesive. You can tack around the sides but make sure the tacks are short enough not to go through as shed walls are thin in places.

Wilkinsons shed felt is cheap enough.  Use Galvanized clout nails for ends and laths to secure feltfrom apex to bottom of felt, 3 each side should do it.

Many, many thanks.   So shopping list:-  Roofing felt 1 roll.   Special adhesive.   Galvanized nails.  Will try Wilkinsons.
Now for the guttering.   Any advice welcome.

never used an adhesive on a shed roof.

my method goes:

1. lay felt, one strip along eaves, then one strip on ridge, overlapping lowre strips.
2. go round all the edges with galv clout nails
3. nail vertical wood lathes every 24 inches , vertically running eaves to ridge to stop wind taking larg chunk if it lifts.
4. wood strips nail on end pieces

never had a leak, never seen water running down a nail hole into a shed.
Nothing is ever as it seems. With appropriate equations I can prove this.

I think you can get leaks if you nail straight into the felt, but using laths usually avoids it.
