Apple trees

Can anyone help? My aunt told me that I need to put a band around my apple trees in November to stop pest climbing up. Unfortunately she is now in hospital so cannot ask her where to get it or even what it is called. She will be 90 next week so it could be something that was around years ago and doesn't even exist now :) :)

Band of masking tape around the tree and good smear of vaseline will do the same for now.. ;)

I use 4" wide strips of black bin bag, electrical insulating tape and open gear grease. Cheers, Tony.
