Cathedral bell vine
« on: October 15, 2011, 18:16:27 »
One of my friends grew this this year, it's a fantastic plant, anyone taken cuttings/layered it?
It says half hardy on the internet but, knowing our winters lately, I don't hold out much hope. Says sow seed but I can't see anything about another propagating type.
Advice greatly appreciated, thanks

We call that the cup and saucer vine down here. I cut it off near to the ground and cover with straw, with 50/50 success. Never tried cuttings  but it does seem to layer itself  I think mine originally came from seed. They really fly away in August.

Just looked in my note book and I have it listed as Cobaea scandens, so perhaps you might get more info if you google that.

Thanks, Ace, I've looked it up some more, it says hard wood cuttings so I'll have a bash. I'll tell her about covering  but, if the winter is as hard as last year, it'll probably go to mush  ;D
I'll also have a look for layered pieces as it's growing along the ground  :)

I'm going to look for seeds tomorrow, and take some cuttings and see if there are any layered bits, ooh, fun   ;D

Nice pics. I want to try this next year and was able to find a packet of discounted seed in the wilko 75% reductions  a few weeks ago.

With our extended summer this year you might even find some seed pods on the plant, they need to dry on the plant. I picked some a few years ago but must have done it too soon as they went mouldy.

I have grown the purple and the white. The white seems more prolific They do make a lovely screen if you put a few in a row up some trellis.  I do take them out at the end of the year.I have put some of boththe white and the purple into Jayb's seed swap.

There are quite a few seed pods there, not ripe yet, so, following Ace's tip, I'll leave them until they dry really well  :)
