Disappointing dahlias

I have grown dahlias from seed this year and put them in large pots. they have grown well but produced lots of leaves and not many buds. Should I have fed them? Or what other reason could there be for this?

Hi Caroline :)
Flowers grown in pots/containers will soon exhaust the nutrients in the compost you have planted them in.
You should have fed them with a high potash fertiliser or tomato fertiliser to promote flower development.

I thought that might be it. I'll give them a feed today- probably too late but i've noticed a few more buds coming through.
