Topic: Spur of the moment - re-potted herbs - right or wrong?

I had a spur of the moment turn today an re-potted all my herbs that were growing with eachother in tubs on my patio. I decidet to pot them into bigger individual pots.... now into the greenhouse to settle down and get some new roots going before winter...  Last year I had a them in a few smaller pots in my porch for winter and they went all dormant and in Spring I re-pooted up - they all grew well this summer. I have done the Rosemary, Thyme, Sage and Marjorum. Hope they all survive..

Was I daft?? Will they normally survive being out over winter?

For me Rosemary and Thyme seem to be as tough as old boots.  Both of mine on a take over bid totally outside.  Thyme can be a bit more fussy and does not seem to like its feet getting too wet.

I would normally agree about the rosemary, but I lost all of my mature bushes last winter! If you have re potted them now I think I would be tempted to overwinter them in a cold greenhouse, as any new growth they put on now as a response to re potting is going to be tender and more vulnerable to the frosts.

I have large sage bushes now, the purple flowering one and it got well frozen over last winter but came back no trouble. Rosemary is usually very hardy as is thyme, but I agree that a bit of protection may do them good if they are just potted.
