Extra seed saving circle?
« on: July 22, 2011, 07:48:14 »
Several people have been asking to join the seed saving circle. Unfortunately this is full.

However;

I know this is late in the day, but if there are any seed savers who would like to make up another group I’d be happy to add some varieties to the mix. It should be simple enough to run alongside the other group.

Anyone interested?

This group is now closed. New group starting in the New Year  :)

You are a star, thanks Robert.

Gadget and Hector welcome to the mini circle, glad to have you on board. Hopefully a few more people who asked to join will get involved. I'm sure between us we will have a nice little selection on offer. I'll try and add seeds around what you guys are offering. Off the top of my head I'm fairly sure I will be able to choose from tomatoes, peas, climbing or dwarf beans, parsnip, onion, tps.

Welcome Mark, glad to have you join. Any ideas of what you will be saving?

Hector are you going with the list you made on the other thread?

Angelica's about ready for bagging, or I'll lose seed. The spinach is looking good, and there should be plenty of peas as long as I can keep the flying rats off them. The beans haven't got started yet, but there should be seed from half a dozen varieties. I've only had one failure (Mrs Fortune's), which caught the late frost badly, and I ended up with one plant. There might be a little seed to share round, but I'm not promising.

All sounds good Robert, I may have Mrs Fortune's beans growing, can't quite remember, I'll check later.

Consider yourself pencilled in 1066  :)

Hi irridium, yes please join in. If you are just starting your interest in heritage/open pollinated varieties, this is a great ideal way to get involved share experiences and have the opportunity to start off your own little collection.

As long as you are able to save some open pollinated seed, usually 2 different varieties of your choice. Heritage is great but not always essential. At this short notice I think it is going to limit your choices of what you can save it will pretty much need to be something you are already growing. Some things won't be suitable  eg  beetroot as this won't seed until the following year, if it does seed in the first year it has bolted and is no good for seed saving. Early bolting is not a good trait to breed for. Check out the other seed circle thread lots of info and links on how to grow and save seed, avoid cross pollination etc.

I'm looking forward to reading what you decide on saving; if you’re not sure of something ask away.

I would love to join in but the only two plants that I have grown for seed saving (first attempt) are Alaskan Fancy Tomato and Yin Yang dwarf beans.  They are growing well and I hope to be able to get some seeds this year.
