A response to one of your open questions:

During the last few years I have had great success with planting potatoes like this:

I make a mound on the soil surface rather like a large molehill about 10/12 inches tall then push the seed potato into the top.  As it grows, I mound it up in the same way as conventional planting.  I have to leave approx 18 inches between mounds, which I still keep in rows, and find that yeilds are just as high.  It also means that I don't have to dig into the ground to get the potatoes out, I just break into the mounds.  I also companion plant around these mounds with lettuce, onions, marigolds (varieties good for cutting!), lettuce, etc.
No doubt traditionalists will find this a bit unusual but, hey, it works for me!
Hope this has been useful.

Hi mike, first of all here are two websides were you can order potatoes;www.vergetengroenten.nl here you find the old variaties, also some from the kingdom. The other side is www.garantzaden.nl. Almost the important question now is what kind of soil do you got on your allotment?THe amount of potatoes you need is roughly 2 kg for 10 square meters.I make rows half a meter apart. In the row i plant them roughly 30 cm apart.Depth 10-12cm.Wenn the poke there noses out i put soil on top of it ,till i got a mount from about 30-40 cm high. Now the types of potatoes thats what you like ,i like firm potatoes after you boild them someone else likes somethingelse. When you are going to the two websides i gave to you you can read all about the different flavours and growing methodes,i hope i gave you enough information, ruud

Ruud,

I would add to your advice that 30cm is ok for first earlies with 60cm between rows, later varietyies should be 40cm apart with 75cm between rows.

The weight required depends on the size of the tubers and can be anywhere between 75 - 125gms each (and sometimes more and sometimes less!!)

If I check the orderlist for seed potatoes in the Netherlands I see as
 early: dore  2,5kg ,E.299
           frieslander 2,5kg, E 4,49

second early: Eigenheimer 2,5kg  E 2,99
                      Ostara 2,5kg  E 3,79

maincrop: Nicola  2,5kg  E 2,99
                Bildstar 2,5kg  E 4,49
                Surprise   2,5kg  E 3,99

Than for biologic ones:
Raja and Junior and Sante.

All those potatoes do very well in the Dutch soil.

You can buy seed potatoes in Brabant at  all the "Boerenbond"and "Welkoop"shops. I think that there are about 15- 20 agr. shops in Brabant alone.
