Hampton Court Show 2011....anyone going/gone?
« on: July 06, 2011, 20:56:50 »
....I went today, first time I had been. Really liked the RHS grow you own tent, there was a stand from Brogdale fruit, so of course I coudn't resist buying a couple of unusual apple trees and a new huge blackberry that looks more like a Tayberry.....and a new hat! OH came as well and looked at tools and structures, plants are not his thing at all! Overall we enjoyed it, anyone else going/been this year yet?
If it's not pouring with rain, I'm either in the garden or at the lottie! Probably still there in the rain as well TBH....🥴

I have just returned with two new dahlias, some sausages and some cheese and am now sitting with my feet up ;D

Visited the poet's gardens and loved the one that Ace constructed [slightly biased as I did help for a couple of days!], but it is really a lovely garden. I will be voting for it and hope you all will too ;)

I have voted for this beautiful garden. Have you?

Yes, I've voted (use the drop-down menu for Small Gardens and find 'Loves Last Adieu') and have also put it on Facebook.

We went yesterday.  It's the first big flower show I've ever been to, and it was amazing!  I came home with quite a few bulbs for the garden (tulip and lily), sweet pea seeds and Ukrainian garlic to plant in the autumn.

I was really inspired by the Edible garden - a gorgeous mix of good things to eat, mixed with beautiful things to look at.  The bee-keeping display/talk was excellent also.  The flower marquee was glorious, although we had to do it in two stages - my eyes got tired with so much colour - so we had afternoon tea as a break!

The poet's gardens were lovely - and the show gardens were by turns lovely and weird.  Which I suppose is what they're aiming for, isn't it?  To provoke discussion and consideration.

I really enjoyed the experience. ;D

Went on the preview evening, lovely summers evening, no crowds and fantastic gardens.

Heavenly.
Best laid plans and all that

I was there yesterday and had a good time. We went to the afternoon session and was there until 7:30. At 6:00 most people were leaving so we got to see much more without loads of other people around. I really needed a lottery win to buy one of those garden jungle hut type things !! I did buy some tomato seeds @ £1 a packet ;D

I've been twice, once on the preview evening (that was a "big birthday" present, actually on my birthday!) and once not. The preview evening was definitely quieter, but we found we couldn't get close to some of the show gardens because there were VIP parties and filming going on. I'd love to go again.

I think later on in the evening, after the medals have been awarded, the film crews and parties begin.  We were able to walk around all the gardens between 5 and 7pm and had some of the gardens to ourselves.
Best laid plans and all that

Back home at last, the gardens are all packed back on lorries, Photos to follow after I get back to reality. Slightly miffed at the award, as it was silver gilt at assessment then the judges knocked it down to silver as in their own words the design was too simple.

It was perfect planting, perfect brief,(revamped by our very own Tin Shed) but instead of reading the poem and then seeing the interpretation in the planting arrangements, which was far from simple. They depicted waves of emotion, dark moods, light moods, dispair and celebration, every part of the garden related to lines in the poem. But the public loved it which is what it is all about in the end.
