Went to allotment today - have some ?'s
« on: January 22, 2005, 20:41:04 »
I finally managed to get to the allotment today. Haven't had a chance all week, either it was raining or on Friday when I finally had time, and it was a beautiful day, my son was not well so had to stay and home with him, he's much better now. Everything's looking quite good, I managed to dig over a huge chunk of the dreaded weed infested section, wasn't as bad as I thought, mostly grass and not couch like I had thought so it came up easily. Despite the rain this week the ground was not too wet and made easy digging. My raspberries, donated by a fellow allotmenteer, still don't look like much, just stalks sticking out the ground and only the teeniest buds on them, some have none. The blackcurrants are full of buds. Do you think the raspberries are okay or have I managed to kill them already! I also have realised that I probably didn't plant enough garlic. Can I get away with planting some now or is it too late, I don't mind small bulbs. The ones I planted in autumn are looking quite good now. My spring cabbages are looking a bit small still but I am hoping when the weather warms up they will grow a bit more quickly.

Garlic - yes - something like Solent Wight - check the garlicfarm or garlic world.

Spring cabbages may not be cuttable as greens for another month, so don't worry. Great for making 'crispy seaweed'!!  And after that they should give you nice hearts. = Tim

Are the raspberries Summer or Autumn fruiting?

Summer may show so small buds now but autumn canes should be cut back to ground about now to get new shoots to start which carry the crop this year.

Will go and have a look at garlic farm and garlic world now. Jerry, I've got autumn and summer rasps but not sure what variety. I will go and cut the autumn ones down to ground level. Thanks  :)
