has anyone ever grown a date from a stone . i have grown one but it has only had one leaf for ages now  was just wondering if anyone has grown one

Never tried myself... as Date Palms are huge trees... but I'll bump this back onto the front page..  :)

I tried as a kid, but couldn't get it to germinate.

 :D Yes . I have grown several . Started them off on the windowsil ,in pots of compost sealed in plastic bags . Can also put the stones into plastic bags of moist compost and when they germinate  ,pick them out and pot up .
Trespassers will be composted !

This works really well, just stick em in the airing cupboard in their bags and you'll get good results. They make quite nice little conservatory plants but obviously you won't get dates.
