yellow powder.
« on: April 03, 2011, 17:45:26 »
Help, I noticed today that my apple tree (dwarf) blackcurrants and lilac bush all have this yellow powder on the branches, what is it please. Have looked up pests etc in  my books and cannot find it.

Could it be pollen or lichen?

How yellow is it? bright or darker?

Its greeny yellow, and it has the appearance of lichen but brighter.  Sorry I am not a lot of help.

I've seen lichen in at least two different colours - one is a pale greyish-greeny blue, the other is more yellowy green and quite bright.
gone to pot :D

Having had a look at some of our older trees on site I'm fairly certain it's just a lichen as Aquilegia says..  :)

Lichen comes in all sorts of colours, we have yellow, orange, black, white, grey on our house and trees.   It rather indicates that you have some good clean air.

There's lots about lichens on  http://www.britishlichens.co.uk/

have a look at the squamous ones.

I love them but some people around here have had it scraped off their houses.
