does anyone know how to test the soil for contaminates? I am about to start growing in a very polluted city site and have concerns aboutthe levels of heavy metals and other toxins..

Try a public health lab and see if they will examine soil sample. You really do need to get some tests done as there my well be some nastys in the soil unless it has been cleaned up.

The HDRA have a good Factsheet on soil testing - how to take a sample, laboratory addresses, and Min of Ag advisory services.
All best - Gavin
