Christmas potatoes
« on: January 20, 2011, 17:14:13 »
With apologies if I've missed whatever happened to the thread about second crop potatoes. Did anyone manage to produce a worthwhile crop?

Mine were Sarpo Mira saved from the spring and planted out in July after the earlies had been dug. I didn't manage to get onto the plot until after Christmas (snow!) but was surprised to find a decent crop of medium-sized tubers under the sraface. A bit of slug damage but unscathed by the cold weather.

The advantage of Sarpos is that they shrug off the blight that is usually around in July, and although I don't usually rate the taste compared to supermarket-bought ones...

It seems to me to be very worthwhile to get two quick crops of potatoes out of the same bed without messing up the rotation. And the second crop comes in just as the stored maincrops start to get a bit sprouty.

My Javelins and Sharpes Express did OK, but were cut down by frost long before Christmas.... indeed I still had spring planted Congo's going after the second planted earlies (late July IIRC) had all died down.,....  I probably won't try to do a second planting this year as TBF I've still got a sack full of PFA's to get through and they taste better than most any new potato anyway.... I might try some Lady Christl I suppose, they are delicious and I'll be trying to grow them as a main crop too as my friend had some that got left in this year, they got big and were absolutely gorgeous baked.... but then that said, so is Setanta......arghh... too many potato varieties.....
