Can I salvage a Christmas Rose?
« on: January 17, 2011, 11:13:50 »
I was given a christmas Rose (Helleborus niger) at Christmas, in a pot. As I am in a flat I put it on the kitchen sill which is quite cold and watered infrequently, however it is incresingly yellow looking and unwell. I am wondering, if I plant it outdoors now, will I kill it?  Although it's looking a bit on death's doorstep anyway, is there some way I can save it? I am HOPELESS with all indoor plants, just as well spuds look mainly after themselves!
please help.
2012 - Snow in February, non-stop rain till July. Blight and rot are rife. Thieving voles cause strife. But first runner beans and lots of greens. Follow an English allotment in urban France: http://roos-and-camembert.blogspot.com

Hellobores are outdoor plants and are not really happy when kept indoors..so you don't have nothing to loose by giving it a 'spot' outside.
You could plant it in your lottie..and when it flowers again many insects will thank you for it..bees particularly ;)
Good thing is hellebores are slow growers so if you cut the spent flower stems off before they have chance to drop the seeds your plant won't spread all over and don't take much room :)

Plant it outside, but if there's too much of a temperature drop it might be wise to acclimatise it gently. It's probably best in the ground; it stays a lot warmer than a pot where it's surrounded by cold air. Some friends of mine put an indoor cyclamen outside last summer, in a bed, and it's still alive after all that cold weather.
