Great Bank Holiday
« on: January 03, 2011, 17:06:44 »
well I've had a fab bank holiday, haven't had to work, got up early - but not too early so am over the jet lag, drank lots of tea, pottered about on the web (here included!!), ordered some gardening books, finally got round to joining HSL, had a lovely fire going all day so it's nice and cozy, haven't bothered getting changed out of my Jammies (  :-X ), great lunch of bubble and squeak using yesterdays roasties and home grown veg, started to sort some of my seed boxes out. Now debating whether to get dressed before I embark on a snifter (seeing as the sun is now well and truly over the yardarm) :-X  ;D    ::)

How about you guys?

1066  :)

I used to love bank holidays when I worked but now that I have retired they are a blooming nuisance and interfere with my normal way of life and I will be only too pleased when every one goes back to work and school and my day time TV, returns to normal. The buses run on time and shops are open when they should be.

Mrs Grumpy I may be  but that is my answer to the question and my reason.

The OH has odd musical tastes.

Come all you land lubbers, you've nothing to fear
    Down the Solent
On a Red Funnel steamer bound from Royal Pier
And we're bound for the Isle of Wight

Ch: And away, boys, away, Down the Solent
We passed Calshot Spit where the seagulls all flit (or s**t)
And we're bound for the Isle of Wight

Away with the gangplank! the Captain, he roared
And hoist up the anchors, jacks, safely on board
ch.

We passed by Esso tankers on a fast-moving tide
Polluting the beaches upon either side.
ch

On the banks of the Solent was a hell of a crowd
A-watching Ted Heath sinking Morning Cloud.
ch

Arriving at Cowes I espied a trim craft
She was well-loaded for'ard and nicely trimmed aft.

ch
I turned this craft round to a well-shelted spot
For she had the powder and I had the shot.
ch

Oh, look what you've done to my rigging, she cried,
Too late, I wsa firing a second broadside.
ch

Now I'm in dry dock it's now I can discern
I'm covered in barnacles from stem to stern.
ch

And now I know why they call this Cowes Week
My foremast's all broken and my mainsa'ls all week.
ch

I suggest we have a A4A collection for ACE to have a brain transplant.

I will personally pledge 50p.

It's been a lovely day for me, too, 1066. Bank Holidays mean that my son and daughter and their partners are off work and my grandsons off school so family get-togethers are the norm.
Today my daughter and her partner were delivering their Christmas gift - (a beehive) - to his mum. My son's son was staying with my daughter so, with her two boys, all six of us set off - (in two vehicles because of the beehive!) - through a little light snow to another West Sussex village.
It was a joy to hear my three grandsons chatting together. They get on really well and, now aged 12, 11 and 10, and are interesting to talk to and all have a great sense of humour.
Best of all, was watching them sit together in front of a huge log fire toasting crumpets, bread and teacakes on old-fashioned brass toasting forks. Lots of laughs, a few 'burnt offerings' - and the smell of a real fire and toasted goodies took me right back to my own childhood. A magical day!

Oh Grandma that sounds like a perfect day! Thanks for sharing I can really picture it all  :)

PH - I guess I know what you mean ...... but for me right now they are still great. I prefer the school holidays when the trains are emptier! But then for everyone else the kids are hanging around the shopping centres etc  :-\

And Ace - loving it ! references to Ted Heath date the shanty nicely :D

A lot of the old times were the best.
When I get old I don't want people thinking
"What a sweet little old lady"........
                             I want em saying
"Oh Crap! Whats she up to now ?"

Purleheather I know what you mean, but I think I have enjoyed it really. Can't wait for the longer days so that I wake up earlier - & before anyone suggests it I don't want an alarm clock.

I know what you mean by watching all the various Grandchildren together.

Mine were all together Christmas Eve and they were lovely to watch.Youngest Grandon is Autistic but he was one of the gang and included in everything and treated with great tenderness by the other Children,he was taught how to get great shots in with the snowball fight  ;D

Made me realise it will not just be us older members of the tribe who will be watching over him in future and that was one of my best Christmas gifts.  ;D

As for sea shanties, yes well I had forgotten that Ace likes similar music to my OH,

My friend and I retreated to the bar half way through, only so much you can do for love.   ;D
