How to store kale?
« on: August 03, 2015, 17:34:39 »
I've just picked some curly kale and the sun was so warm that by the time I left the plot an hour later it was already wilting. Obviously I should have cut it at the last minute, but has anyone got any tips for reviving it or how to store kale generally as it's the first year I've grown it.

Pick as late as possible before leaving the plot.   Put it in a seal-able plastic bag with a bit of water when picking it then keep it in the shade.

When you get it home, give it a good rinse with cold water, shake off the excess and put it back in a seal-able plastic bag in the fridge.  It should crisp up again.

Treat it as you would a bunch of flowers, that is ,trim the stems and place in a vase full of cold water.Keep the softer leaf out of the water. Stand out of the sun but in daylight in a cool room. Spinach, broccoli, chard and other leaf crops will stay usable for 4-5 days like that. Change the water if it becomes "organic"
