Leeks
« on: December 03, 2010, 08:45:36 »
My leeks are looking a bit poorly under about 8 inches of snow.  Should I have lifted them and frozen them by now?  Never had enough in the past to last this long, but had a good crop this year.

They will be fine, when the weather warms up they will even continue to grow, but you will want to dig them up before they start to go to seed.
If there's nothing wrong with me, maybe there's something wrong with the universe!

Thanks.  Am relieved I won't lose them.  Just dug one out (with great difficulty) and made soup, as reckoned it was just like using it from the freezer.   :)

I agree - last year mine were exposed to some terribly cold temperatures, well below zero and they were fine and dandy. They are a bugger to get out when the ground is really hard though, I tend to dig out the last ones as I start planting the spring crops...
2012 - Snow in February, non-stop rain till July. Blight and rot are rife. Thieving voles cause strife. But first runner beans and lots of greens. Follow an English allotment in urban France: http://roos-and-camembert.blogspot.com
