To move or not to move ....
« on: December 24, 2004, 17:17:27 »
I have recently inherited another plot. On it seem to be fairly permanent-looking supports that have been used for runner beans and others for tomatoes.

Do you think I should "bite the bullet" and move the supports onto another section of the plot or leave it in situ. I don't know how long these supports have been in their present positions.

Big arguments on here and other places about permanent beds for Runner beans versus moving the trench every year. If the supports are strong and well preserved I would be inclined to leave the Runner bean ones in place and work on the soil.
Tomatoes really should not be grown in the same place every year, there are a lot of diseases and so on which build up very quickly in soil which would seriously affect your crop. Either use the supports for something else, Climbing French Beans? (much tastier than Runner beans anyway) or sweet peas or dismantle and move them elsewhere to fresh soil.
Gardening is the great leveller.
