I'm so excited...
« on: January 23, 2004, 11:12:33 »
and I just can't hide it...

The seeds I ordered off the internet arrived yesterday (well apart from the Echinacea as they'd run out of that!)

So now I have: carrots, parsnips, leeks, squash, camoumile, fennel and four new types of tomatoes (thanks EJ for the latter two!) to grow for the first time this year. Plus: more tomatoes, two types of peppers, sweetcorn, radish, herbs and broad beans seeds left from last year. Plus the courgette and runner bean plants mum gives me.

So why does it have to be January? I can't wait to get started... roll on spring.

And what are you growing this year?

We also got a big juffy bag full of seeds last week. Its almost better than Christmas.

We've got Cauli, Broccoli, Cabbage, courgette, cucumber, peas (2 packs), tomatoes (4 packs), carrots (3 packs), parsnips, spring onions, radish, letuce (2 packs), fennel, parsley, chamomile and swiss chard.

That goes with the apsaragus, garlic and strawberries planted last year; the gooseberry we inherited with the plot; and the blueberries, raspberries and blackcurrant planned for Feb!

Do you think it was overkill picking up some onion sets (2 types) from the garden centre yesterday?

This gardening lark is far too exciting, I'm going to have to go and lie down for a while..... ;)

mine arrived last week - like Christmas opening them all.  I've got cooks collection of seed potatoes, courgettes, pumpkin, swede, parsnip, carrot, sweetcorn, peas, broad and runner beans, herbs.  I've only got half a plot so have done a school-gate deal with a chicken keeping plotter on my site whose son goes to nursery with mine - some of my seeds for regular buckets of chicken manure for the heap.  The only problem with the seeds arriving is I want to start NOW! - and the weather report from Sunday in Newcastle is seriously freezing day and night, and probably snow as well!

And how could I have forgotten about my fruit: Strawberries, apples (two baby trees - had one apple last year!) and rhubarb (second year so can actually eat it this year. mmmm rhubarb crumble and custard!) and then there's the olive tree too, but I doubt it'll actually fruit and it's really just an ornament for me!

At work we put names in a hat at christmas and spend £20 on a present for the name that you pull out. I got
Alpine Strawberries
Cabbage
Carrots
Swede
Broccoli
Tomato
Cuecumber
Radish
Peas
Marrow

I think there were more than that but as I am at work and cant see them I am guessing. My crimbo pressie will keep me amused all year long and just think of all the money that I wont have to spend this year. :)

It seems like ages between opening those magic packages and finally gettting to sow them.  Cant we skip winter and go straight from Autumn to spring ?   ::)

I'm doing me ordering this weekend (sometime in between digging, digging, digging and housework) but already have:

50 cabbage seedlings, doing v well.
50 Alexon (?) toms, doing brill
35 Gardners delight toms, doing almost as well.

Happy seedlings growing shoots - will post piccy to prove it..

Other stuff is still in packets (see, I have restraint)..

Need seed company names tho, cos only have Marshalls - any good ones out there? (specially for heritage/weird veg n fruit)

We used http://www.thompson-morgan.com for our seeds this year. They do a few herritage varieties, and a lot of RHS merit winners.

Their seed seems quite reasonable, but the cost of their spuds and onion sets seems a bit rich to me! I went to the local garden centre for them instead.

I find most seed catalogues pretty good although I mostly use Simpsons and Suffolk Herbs for my retail purchases-and am trying a company called `Plants of Distinction` as well this year.

Sadly though I find T&M to be overly expensive.

Derek-do please keep me informed as to how your Okra gets on-I find it hard to get a decent crop-lovely flowers but not much fruit.

I was hoping to get some seeds from a friend of mine in Belgium who has had considerable success with her owned saved seed but she was badly mugged not so long ago and is a bit behind.  If I get any I would be happy to send you a couple to try out.

If there is one it would be worth joining your local allotment society (ours welcomes gardeners also) they order the seeds in bulk therefore getting members some discount off the seeds. In addition ours also takes orders for the seed potatoes, beans, onion, shallot sets.. etc in bulk and has negotiated a good price for its members also.

I have used Future Foods in the past. They're only a small company, but they specialize in rare and unusual edible plants. They have a website but not online ordering.

Excellent advice-and even if there is no organised group try to form your own. I use `Moles Seeds`for my bulk buying and the price difference is staggering

my husband says he'll leave me if i get my seeds out to show him the packets once more  :D

i wish i could plant them, but that would eb a bit silly in whitley bay with ceri's forecast! i was going to spend my afternoons this week erecting elaborate cloche systems with the hundreds of little panes of glass there are on my plot but i have decided against it with the weather!!

i have:
already in: onions (red and white), garlic, spring cabbages, strawberries, rhubarb, sweet williams and broad beans.

in seed form: spinach, carrots, radish, spring onions, leeks, parsnips, salad leaves, beetroot, peas, sugar snaps, brussels sprouts, runner beans, lettuce, tomatoes, sunflowers, swiss chard, sweet peas, courgettes, kale, marigolds, salad potatoes and tonne sof hebs for companion planting

it might fit!  ;D

Hi legless, funny that about husbands...mine won't play anymore either - won't discuss compost heaps, companion planting, chitting seed potatoes or anything interesting...  Mind you, when I said my lovely (in many senses of the word) gardener friend from down the road is lending me his trailer and his body to get a load of manure to my site in a swap for some scaffolding boards he suddenly agreed to take a morning off to help with that one.... can't wait to see the 'who can get more manure on the fork and is therefore the bigger man' competition - of which obviously the biggest winner will be .....ME!!!

Spent 4 hours today double digging and shifting lots of manure! Hubby was NOWHERE in sight!! (well, to give him his dues he was at work!:-) ) but even if he hadn't been, he still wouldn't have been anywhere near.....which suits me fine! MY PLOT :-)  My peace n quiet! Mind you I am thinking maybe I should suggest to Dan that Radox sponsers this site!!

CRIPES !! I'd better get a move on !!

It's so long since I was last down at the lottie that I've
almost forrgotten which plot is mine.
Am trying in vain to persuade stressed out hubby that a bit of digging will do him good... he hasn't taken me up on the idea yet !!

Ever hopeful,
Debs.

At the time of typing he peered in the door read my message and still didn't respond positively !!

What is a girl to do ??
