How do you insert thumbnail photos here?
« on: August 04, 2010, 07:33:49 »
For example - the first post here

http://www.allotments4all.co.uk/smf/index.php/topic,62016.0.html

Does it depend on which photoshare site you use whether you can do it or some function on this forum?

Thanks....

They're mine!

I used to use Photobox, but it's much simpler to pay Dan £10 a year and put them on here directly.  I can't remember now where the option to pay him is but I'm sure someone will be along soon with a much better memory than mine.  ;)

You have to pay a tener to do the thumbnail thing..
To pay, click on profile at the top then on the left under Modify Profile click on paid subscriptions..

Thanks, that's a riddle solved.

But Lordy!  I cannot afford even a tenner having turned down loads of work to catch up with my plot this summer.

I'm happy, but poor.

Personally I no longer even bother trying to look at thumbnail pictures. It takes over 5 minutes (on a good day) to go and see the full size versiom. What is wrong with putting your pictures on Photobucket and linking to the reasonable size ones on there? At least then us poor folks with no Broadband access (and probably never will be able to get it here) can see the pictures.

I just think it's less 'in your face' putting thumbnails up.  Says 'look at my photos if you fancy it" rather than "LOOK AT MY PHOTOS NOW", but I didn't realise they took ages to download.

I didn't know that either.  Is it every photo?  I always reduce the size of mine before I attach them, they are usually less than 100kb.

Well to begin with I do not agree that it is 'in your face' Until Dan changed the way pictures were displayed they were always at a reasonable size. Mine on PB are 450 by 338 which gives enough definition for people to see the plants but take a reasonable length of time to appear. They are posted to PB at less than 60kb as it takes a very long time for a bigger file size to upload.
The picture above is a reasonable size for both the length of time it takes to appear and to be able to see the thing itself.

The size which annoys me (and probably only me) is the 1 inch by 3/4 inch size which appears in many postings with the message Click for a larger image. If the larger image is as big as some of them they never actually appear before I get fed up and go elsewhere.

This is to me is a good size to post. 450 by 338 and a file size of 84 kb

Stangely enough both squashes thumbnail images and Palustris inline images are the same size in terms of KB!

Do my thumbnails open quickly?  They open instantly for me.  Does this depend on the size of the photo, or the internet connection speed?

They do for me!  ;D
Speed is dependent on both factors but if you are on good old fashioned dial up then any big pictures will take an age.  If you are on nice fast broadband or cable then, within reason, size wont matter a great deal.
Sad to say but todays web is not really designed for dailup anymore..
