Umm...that looks like a rhododenron that is trained as a standard..there is quite a lot late flowering hybrids now available..shame about the close up photo not being quite clear..are the leaves very shiny and quite hard..?...is the new growth sticky?

Yes I would go along with Ace and say escallonia, both the flowers and leaves appear to be too small for a rhodo.

Ace/laurieuk, what sort of escallonia is it please? I've only ever seen the one called Apple Blossom, which doesn't look like that at all, with smaller leaves. I quite like the look of the photo. When was it taken Pesky Wabbit?

There are so many different escallonia that it is only a quess but it looks as if it could be escalonnia edinensis.

When was it taken Pesky Wabbit?

15 July. Unfortunately, dark clouds were looming when I took the pic. and they're not too clear.
I shall try and take a better close-up this week.

It looks so lovely and looks to be a good size too, would be interesting to see a clearer pic of leaves and flowers  :)

The leaves/ flowers don't compare very well.

My leaves are generally in fives, sometime fours with the last set being much a lighter green than the rest.
The sets on leaves have a short inter nodal distance, ie about 1 inch
The flowers (now fading) are tube like. Each  flower cluster being of upto 8 tubes and appear at the end of a branch (bit like a Rhododendron)

The flower is like an Abelia flower too but looking on google images I couldn't see one that looked quite close enough but have run out of time now, I will keep it in mind though. Good luck
