what are black worms in raspberries?
« on: July 15, 2010, 23:00:37 »
Hi -  was embarassed today when giving guests some home-grown raspberries, when I found two little black wriggling worms.

If there's anything worse than a worm, it's a writhing worm.  :o

I wondered what they were - raspberry beetle has large white larvae, doesn't it? So I guess these must be something else.

And do you soak raspberries like late season blackberries for this reason?

I did the same thing last season, very embarrassing. This is just about the time that the grubs hatch, not very appetising. Yes, now is the time to soak them and hope they all float to the surface. My dad always used to say wash soft fruit and veg three times before cooking. I found this advice really good for cauliflowers and broccoli. but I am sure that we have all eaten a few grubs in our time.

Tell them it's a nice bit of free protein.

I prefer my protein to have ceased wriggling by the time it gets to the table!

So what are they then? These black wrigglers? Not raspberry beetle?
