thinking about getting another dog
« on: March 13, 2010, 18:57:54 »
Hi I know you guys are just the people to give me the advice i need. we have Charlie a ? 3year old patterdale x whom we have had for almost a year and he is absolutely wonderful. we are considering another dog as a companion and play mate for charlie and because we have a loving home to offer, (cant guarantee wont spoil said dog though).
we are looking to get another terrier of charlies size or smaller and of around the same age. we have no set ideas about any particular dog but it obviously must get on well with charlie and must be a rescue.
we have a medium size garden and are surrounded by large green fields and live about half an hour from the beach (charlies favourite place)
we are both in our 40s and charlie gets about 2 hours of excercise minimum a day. i work shifts and hubby works mon to fri so dogs may need to be left for about 4 hours a couple of times a month. so would need to be house trained and able to be left.
there are 2 step children of 15 and 18 who visit alternate weekends
is it possible to find out if two dogs are compatible at a rescue, would they not need to be in a home environment to be sure?
what is the best way to go about introducing a new dog, please give me all the information and experiences you can
another question i have is if we rescued a dog and it really didnt settle well here with charlie would a rescue take the dog back and do they refund your fee, i am very happy to pay but if for some extreme reason (it would have to be an extreme reason) the two dogs couldnt get on we wouldnt be able to pay another fee for another dog
many thanks for your help and advice
debbie and charlie

Hi, in my opinion most dogs settle well with another dog, there may be a few tangles at first but only for a few days,my advice would be to get a female and have her fixed as two males are a wee bit more likely to be a small problem. In the beginning they woule do the "I am the boss bit" but that soon works itself out. I do speak from experience as I bred dogs for most of my life and have handled many resues for my breed.

As you say it has to be a rescue, consider contacting someone in the breed of your choice, almost all breeds in the UK have their own rescue group and would be delighted to help you. You will find their details on the net, if you get stuck I may be able to help although now back in Canada the phone is not an option as easily.

Re the rescue place refunding if not compatible, I would ask up front.

If you do get a dog, walk them together on  leashes as often as you can, and feed them in separate rooms in the beginning, also I would remove Charlies favourite toys for a while. It would seem to me that Charlie is well socialised and has doggy etiquette so I don't think you would have much of a problem.

Try hard to find out why the dog need to be re housed, anf if it the allergic thing ask a few more questions as tht is a common reason used to give up a dog and rarely true.
Good luck,

XX Jeannine

thank you Jeannine for your answer. we are not going to rush into choosing another dog i believe in fate and that charlie will choose his new companion, we have no set breed in mind just would like a small dog and would love it to be a terrier, and as i said has to be a rescue :D

I know this is a late reply - but better late than never! I cannot get a feel from your email about which country you are in - but if it Great Britain, I can highly recommend a rescue group called "Many Tears". They specialise in puppy farm dogs and some o fthe stories are heartrending, but we took a dog from them a year ago and with a lot of love and work - she has turned out to be a wonderful dog.

I later took on another rescue dof and they get on very well together - after a slightly sticky start - not unexpected and easy to deal with. As I earn a little extra money by looking after dogs in my own home, you can imagine how relaxed and confident my 2 girls are, as they allow any dog I introduce into the house and make them welcome.

They are a fantastic organisation and deserve all the help they can get. They have a very, very good website - just put in many tears uk.

Good luck.
