Flight of the dragonfly!
« on: May 21, 2010, 23:54:10 »
The dragonfly I watched hatch yesterday - (magic moment) - was still there this morning. It had extended its wings and had turned itself round so I was able to get a slightly better pic. You can still see the small, empty shell from which it emerged just below it.

A few minutes later it took to the air and I thought that would be the last I would see of it - but its first flight was only as far as my clothes line! Not a very picturesque background but at least it was at eye level and I was able to get a close up of the beautiful creature.

Nice pictures of your dragonfly!
It so happens that I had the same experience yesterday. Three larvae crawled out of my pond from which the dragonflies appeared. I had never seen this happening for real. It was fascinating.

For anyone who is interested, I wrote a short blog post about it on my garden blog at : http://allthumbsandnogreenfingers.wordpress.com/2010/05/22/deploy-all-dragonflies/

Interesting! We have dragonflies but have never seen the larvae.

Yes, thanks for telling me. A friend had pointed it out as well. It is chives and not basil. I have no idea why I wrote down basil. ::)

I by accident deleted your comment on my blog. Am still new in finding out how it all works. I enjoyed reading your blog too! :) I wasn't able to leave a comment on it, so I hope you read this.

Thanks for the welcome 1066. Always nice to find a new forum and talk to people who love the same thing you do. :)

Welcome to A4A Maria Staal. If you can't be in your garden or on your allotment - (if you're lucky enough to have one) - this is the next best place to be! xxx
