broad beans another query
« on: May 20, 2010, 09:59:11 »
My broad beans are now 4-6 inches high.  They have started producing branches from the base,  2 or 3 new shoots.  I have never had this happen before.  On my neighbour's plot his broad beans are a bit higher and have only the one stalk.  Should I cut off the side shoots?

Leave them, they photosynthesise like the main stem and give the plant added strength. Are you growing a different variety?

No.  They are Aquadulce Claudia which I have grown many times but I don't remember them branching out quite so low before, only when the first stem has got to its full height.  Thanks for reply.  Just off to give them a drink.

I've had them branching, so it's probably something they do when they feel like it.

So a funny year for b/b.   Mine are Sutton's too.  I must ask my neighbour what he is growing.
