No spirit level.
« on: May 07, 2010, 20:39:51 »
If you want to level something in the garden and dont have a spirit level, get a bit of clear pipe, mark one end with a felt tip ( better use a sharpie as the others in here are watching ! ) get the OH to hold the mark where you want it and then hold the other end of the pipe to whatever it is you want levelled, then pour water down the pipe, water will always find its level and so when the OH shouts the water is at the mark, your end is also at the same level, great for doing path laying or such.

Ignore me I'm having a breakdown.

This system possibly goes back to the time when they built the pyramids.

Many builders merchants sell them as water levels.

I only gid rid of mine a few years ago!

Very useful tool as you can do your levelling & watering with the same tool!

You men wouldnt need to do it.

Wifey will already have done it because she's been waiting for years for you to get round to it.

Now just pipe down and pour her the nice cold glass of wine she deserves  ;)

oh and she will have got it perfect first time too whilst multitasking of course ;D

Of course, you could always go back to "Pre-technology". Get a line (you do have a line, don't you?) hand something heavy on it (it's called a plumb line). Get a large Tee square (or make one), place it on the ground, hang the line on the top, move the square until the lne is in-line with the vertical arm and the horizontal arm is level.

To make a square follow the formula 3,4,5. Explanation: base = 3, vertical = 4, hypotenuse (the line joining 3 & 4) = 5, the angle at the junction of 3 and 4 is 90 degrees. This can also be used when laying out groundworks etc.

If the Egyptians got the levelling right for the pyramids they have since lost the knack.  It rain for the first time for years when I went and the water was flowing into the hotel instead of out of it.

Women do not generally work there as builders so it much has been a man.
