Topic: What do you do when you cannot get to your allotment?

There was only once when I couldn't get to my allotment. There was so much snow on the ground that I couldn't even open the gate. I went home and played silly games on my computer. Then I phoned a friend and we went 50/50 on a night out.

It is a lovely pattern isn't it, I have made the arc once or twice. I am  very fond of Alan Dart's patterns and have rather a lot of them.. try Muffin the Mule, he is lovely. I keep meaning to do the Dickensian Mice.

Your son will love the arc, I put one in to our school and really enjoyed it, much nicer than hard plastic things.

Have you done any of his dogs.

this is the first alan dart item i've made i'm almost done (his birthday is next month) just got the sewing up to do which is painstaking! 

he's going to freak, he's very much into animals at the moment.

i just didnt realise quite how big it was when i started lol!

It is worked from the outside in.

The border is made first..see close up border pattern  (this one is quite wide),  cast on edge  and last row edge  are grafted together, then using circular needle  940 stitches are picked up all round the border inside edge,  then gradually work to the centre decreasing as you go. This one has just had the stitches picked up.

You cannot really see it well till it is finished, washed and stretched into place till dry, then the points etc are precise.

It will be square, just looks round at the moment.

While my mum was in hospital in the summer I knitted a set of the Alan Dart Ark animals, ended up doing loads extra because so many nurses wanted something for their little ones! I set mum on knitting the easy parts for the Ark as therapy after her stroke too.
Jeannine, are what you knit the same things as ring shawls? I've always wanted to do one of those.

small.Yes, they are ring shawls,  they will pull through a wedding ring.

Have a go They are not as dificult as you might think

Take a look at Jamieson and Smith wool merchants Shetland Isles, you would need 1 ply Cobweb wool. I think they only sell kits now, not the patterns alone but if you buy the wool I can send you any of their patterns , I have them all, plus others too.

The Sheelaugh is the most complicated but really it is because of the border. The Rosemary is very nice.

Thy do have a few 2 ply ones but they technically are not ring shawls.

They are worth doing as they sell for about up to 300 sterling depending on which one.I do mine for fundraising.

I remember doing something like that back in the 70s and as I'm rubbish at knitting it must be easier than it looks :)

Do jigsaw puzzles, and dream about seeds, take photos of them, and then go to the 99p shop and buy more seeds.

go walking. used to go walking with OH and miss it so have started going with the local walking for health group and have just joined the ramblers

Also walk with the Ramblers, and have you tried Holiday Fellowship Holidays, walking or other interests, they are great.
