Problem: the slugs eat the seed leaves off as soon as seeds germinate outside. So now, when I plant my bean seeds/squash seeds/ cucumber seeds/ flower seeds etc outside I try to surround them immediately by pressing a small recycled yogurt cup / plastic cup with the bottom cut out or a loo roll into the ground. This seems to foil the slugs at least until the seed leaves appear. They stand a better chance at surviving. Just make sure you haven't caged a little slug IN when you shove the cup into the soil. ;D
