Topic: British Sign Language

Anyone on here sign?
I have started learning the basics, mostly to be used at work in a medical/hospital setting, but i would love to carry on and learn up to level one
anyone done this?

Debbie, well done, I think it is a brilliant thing to learn and would like to find somewhere to do it.  I have learnt some Makaton for use in school which is similar and I find it fascinating.  I know a couple of people who use it in their work and it must make such a difference to someone coming into the hospital if they can communicate. :)

I think it's a brilliant thing to learn, I only know the alphabet and bits and pieces, I know you can get lessons as my sister in law has classes, she's passed her grade one and is studying grade 2..I hope you can find somewhere, i like the idea of teaching babies to sign  :)

I taught myself the alphabet from a book when I was laid up in bed as a wee girl.  I have been able to use what I remembered as well.

I've allways wanted to learn but never got round to it.
We've been using a little bit of Makaton for the last 6months with our daughter  she is now 2yrs old.

I got taught a few rude expressions in sign language. You can easily see what they're on about. . Think also the shorthand as it were sign for "Bill Clinton" is also a bit naughty. Probably not in the Basic Course  ;)

Why not try Macaton Deb its easier to learn and most deaf people can use that.
 Macaton is used in most schools for the deaf.

Hi Y'All

I wanted to sign up for a British Sign Language class, but because our local adult ed. deem it to be a foreign language, they wanted to charge over £300 for an 8 week course.  So if OH and myself went it would cost over £600, and no concessions!.  So we signed up for lipreading classes, which is not deemed a 'language' class, and it never ran because of lack of support.  Ho Hum, charades anyone?

I had an interesting experience six years ago. I was escorting a large French group through Eastern England (cycling). They had support vehicles etc., and support personnel as they were disabled. At one point I was talking to a French lady who was deaf, through an interpreter (English to French) and sign interpreter (French). After a little while she was replying directly by lip reading my words, she must have been very conversant with English.

Look on e bay for the book and video you will need, sadly I left mine in the UK when I came back here.I signed up and started but found out it was different to ASL which I neeeded most so I backed out.I thougt it would be too confusing  as there were crossovers .

Just had alook and I still have the book which was used it is British Sign Language by Dorothy Miles, it is yours if you want it.I can pop it in the mail.I can't help with the video though as we left them all over there.
