Mulching
« on: November 08, 2004, 12:57:12 »
Hi everyone - first post, though have been listening in for some time now - hope no-one minds!  ;)

This was my first year with an allotment, so basically bunged lots of different things in to see how it grew and what problems there were.  Plans now advanced for next year and can't wait.

One question I have at the moment is to do with mulching.  At our allotment, the committee get in loads of spent hops (being in a brewery town...) which are for anyone to use. I've dug over some areas and spread this on and it seems to be fine.  But I'm worried about using it as a mulch between plants - will it "burn" if it comes into contact with young plants?  Or should I spread it on an area first to let it "wash out"?

Any thoughts gratefully received... ;D

Hi EJ!  Yes, when you've just spread ten bags on the soil, there is a distinct beery smell.  At least on those occasions, Mrs Wivvles doesn't mind when I go home smelling like a brewery... ;D

Know nothing much about hops but glad to see you on the site - think we all lurk around fior a while before making ourselves known!

Glad you find allotmenteering addictive too!
