Topic: I've just got an allotment

Well, nearly, I sign on the dotted line later on this afternoon.

I'm everso excitied.  ;D

Have been having a good look around the site and it looks great, expect lots of questions  ;D

I've no idea wether my plot is a full one or a half one, I shall measure it in due course.

The chap from the council said they had an "head gardener" put down some "stuff" about three weeks ago to get rid of the weeds and now they are dead and he brushed some away with his shoe to reveal the earth underneath.

I know it won't stay that way for long though  ;) I plan to cover as much as I can with weed surpressent, then dig abit then either plant in the bed or cover it over until I want to use it.

Oh I know all about courgetts  :o, I did veg in pots last year. The first 50 or so are nice  :P

Makes you think you've really got "green fingers"  ;D  ;D

I rather stupidly planted a second 5 or 6 when I got my plot, they are now producing enough for a small shop  ;D

Good job we can make cakes to freeze :P

I oly planted one, by mistake as I thought it was a pumpkin. I haven't used anything like all the courgettes, and by the time I've frozen the marrows it's growing now, I'll have plenty for the next year.

Having once been a courgettaholic I know the only real solution is total abstinence  ::) and this is why I no longer grow them at all - after all there are plenty of others on the allotment site still addicted who are only too happy to give some spares away to a welcoming pair of hands  ;) ;D ;D

Hello everyone; i am also about to get an allotment and am new to your site. It is exciting. I should be in line about December and so am thinking whether to accept a full size or half.

I will be listening with great interest what you all have to say, and will not i hope be too embarrassed to ask the most green of questions.

Funny actually. As I was taken around the site last week there were little  piles of courgettes along the path. It was suggested that i take them with me. Now i understand why.

Robert, how do you freeze marrows...do they need blanching?

Doyou have to take the skin off?

I just slice them and freeze them. Others may have more sophisticated methods.
