Thanks for the tip-off, Buster54. They weren't out in the Newbury Tesco this morning, that I could see, but it's great to know that they soon might be. I've just invested in four pear trees, an apricot and a peach, but may be able to grow an extra apple or two as cordons... :)

Have just spotted fruit trees at Tesco in Hungerford, although there are only ornamental trees at the Newbury store. I was interested to see what was on offer since I followed the controversy regarding Tesco's sponsorship of the Brogdale Horticultural Trust with interest a few years back. My view was that if it's ok to criticise Tesco when it doesn't support British fruit growers, it's NOT ok to knock them when it supports the National Fruit Collections at Brogdale.

On that basis, I chose a cooking apple (Arthur Turner, with decorative pink blossom), Lord Lambourne (one of my favourite eaters), Sunburst cherry (a good, modern variety) and Marjorie's Seedling plum (a heritage cooking plum which originated in West Berkshire, which is not far away from where I live in Hampshire).

From the label, it seems that these trees were sourced from Europe, but all my other trees have been sourced from specialists in the UK. It will be interesting to see how they all rub along in my ever-more-crowded garden! (There are no allotments in my village.)

Thanks again for the tip-off, Buster54!  :)

Have you splashed on some fruit trees, yourself?

Yes, I've just read the Aldi newsletter and found the same thing! As luck would have it, there isn't an Aldi in my area (although a one is going to open in the near future). So I hope Aldi is good for you, anyway!  :)

Saw the fruit trees in the Aldi next to work this am  and they looked pretty good... certainly taller than the 1.2m minimum they claimed
