My first alloment!
«
on:
January 20, 2010, 20:02:07 »
Hello, I've been on the waiting list for an allotment for months and I finally got one on saturday.
So far I've managed to knock up a make shift compost heap and dig up a few old crops from the previous tenants (is that the right word) that had gone a manky with all the snow.
Cant wait for the evenings to get lighter so i can spend more time down there!
Hope to learn a lot from you all on here to get me thru my first allotment year!
Wish me luck :-*

Well I managed to salvage a bit of cabbage that wasn't really fit for human consumption but the chickens thoroughly enjoyed it.
The rest of it went in my new compost heap.
I felt like I'd done loads but then when i stood back and looked, I'd hardy made a dent! haha. Guess theres a lot to do....
I'm so excited!

Just make sure you grow stuff that your family will eat, quite a few of us on here fell foul of growing stuff because you have the seeds or everyones growing it and end up giving it away. ??? ;D ;D ;D

And don't plan to grow too much, before you've had time to clear and prepare the soil. How much is too much depends on you and your plot.
Mind you, I'm telling you that, but I know you'll plan too much. We all do! ;D
But although I can't follow my own advice, I know that if you buy too many seeds and plan too many crops, you always feel behind with it, and worried about finding time to clear and add compost.
As I say, I will probably ignore my own advice anyway... ;D

Please don't be offended by my nickname 'Mortality'
As to its history it was the name of a character I played in an online game called 'Everquest'
The character 'Mortality Rate' was a female Dark Elf Necromancer, the name seemed apt at the time and has been used alot by me over the years.

Congrats and good luck, i got my plot at the end of last feb its a daunting task but very rewarding, and nothing beats the feeling of escaping from the pressures of life on a warm summers day, even if its just to crack a bottle of wine and chill, great excersise too i lost over a stone last year.

I got my first allotment not quite a year ago. I hope that you all enjoy yours as much as I have done. It seemed very hard work to start but then when the crops started coming in was all worth while. I am thoroughly hooked.
