Thought it was Tim. I saw it in Booths supermarket yesterday & it was from the IoW. I bought some to grow.

If you buy Solent Wight, note this  - [attachment=1]

Also that Garlic likes pH ABOVE 6.7.

I'm trying to get the feeding regime sorted. It's variously stated as Potash, Nitrogen or General fertiliser.

I've seen them at mine. I don't feed garlic, I just give it a couple of inches of dead leaves or grass cuttings, and leave it to its own devices.

2008/9 was 'an excellent year, but late'.

Those could give some of my elephants a complex!

Any explanation as to how / why spring sowing gives a  'better quality' ?

  Regards .

Tim,
Interesting post.
My 'Italian barber' gave me some starter bulbs two years ago which have been very succesful.
Interesting if they have been 'Venetion White' but he doesn't know & neither do I.
Popped out to the garage to weigh a couple of this years crop & 110gms they were. Very happy. I planted 30 'progeny' last week (big as my thumb) in well prepared ground & here's hoping for a good cold spell & a good hot summer!!!!!

That is a monster Tim! I've tried Spring planted garlic now for (only) 2 years and have had naff all in comparison to the winter planted ones. I presume my site and soil are not condusive for them.
So I decided not to bother with Solent White this year and am pining my hopes on Provence Wight, Albgensian Wight, Early Purple Wight and Iberian Wight this year, they did exceptionally well last year - they'll be planted out in the next few days  :)
Oh and a few elephant garlic to keep the big kid happy  ;D
