they are the seeds, and blackbirds eat them ;)

You can grow plants from the seeds/berries, but the problem with them is that they start coming up all over the place if they drop off the original plant.

That's why the best thing to do is grow male asparagus...
What if the hokey cokey is what it's all about?

I have been picking them off as soon as they go red and have used them to grow new plants. They are very sticky when you open the berries.

On Gardeners World's allotment it was said that the best thing to do with any which started to fruit was to pull up the entire stem as soon as the it was identified as female.

I can see what delboy means about growing all over the place if you leave them because they seem to be easy to propagate.

To my knowledge there is no use for them as being useful to us, medically but you could always pick them off and put them on the bird table, the birds are worth feeding over winter.

unless you need the seeds i would have thought it would be best for the plant if you got rid of the berries as soon as poss,
you left the ferns on to build up the plant, allowing it to fruit would negate that wouldnt it.

Thanks guys & gals, I can see the point of picking them off, and also letting a few grow new plants!

Ours haven`t got any berries but noticed them on other plots!

Wonder if the asparagus on Farmville get berries!!!!! ;D

I've only got 6 "boys" but 2 of them have berries! Very modern male!
