aminopyralid re approved
« on: June 06, 2009, 11:21:25 »
Hi Folks
Terrible news today, the commitee has decided to recomend approval for aminopyralid.
See the pests and disesases thread for more info.

Always always test any manure you have from now one and keep an eye on groundwater contamination.

I am amazed by this.  I have just become worried by some odd things happening on my allotment.  If we have contanimation here it will filter underground and end up in the Thames and so onto the London water source. :o :o :o :o :o

They were hoping the fuss had died down and sneaked it through.

It isn't through yet. There is a new petition on the website of the Office of the PM  http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/aminopyralidban/ Give it support and tell your contacts about it.

It takes deformed babies to do that, unfortunately.

Its the second one. Last year's asked for the stuff to be banned and the stuff was withdrawn until the producers could show that they could exercise more control over it. The Advisory Committee on Pesticides now think that a proposed stewardship system (see Tuesday, July 21 http://glallotments.blogspot.com/)is good enough and has recommended reinstatement of the herbicides in question. I and many others disagree - we think there are major flaws in the proposals and that contamination will recur.
So it's a new petition and we must support it if we are concerned for our produce and the long term health of our land.

All the uptodate information about aminopyralid is already here on the forum bigshod.  There are several recent threads including this one.

http://www.allotments4all.co.uk/smf/index.php/topic,53791.0.html

As the petition doesn't close until the end of October, there's every chance that the products will be re-approved before then as the ACP has given the nod to ministers that they are happy.  Action needs to be taken before October.

Last year the products were withdrawn (July) long before the petition (which only attracted 1500 signatures) was submitted (October) so I think it's rather disingenuous to claim a link.

How many gardeners are there in the UK?  Perhaps 3 million watch Gardeners' World?
