Do chickens need a round or square perch? We have got some rescued hens but they seem to be struggling on round perches.

Hi,
I too have ex battery hens, and I am the County Durham coordinator for HRUK.
When I first got mine they huddled together on the coop floor for the first few weeks.
After a while they found the comfort of the nest boxes, this is okay by me but I had to check the nest boxes early every morning as the eggs would get covered in poo.
As it stands now (six months since I got them) most of them do perch but three do still sleep in the nest boxes.
As for the perches a length of two by two timber with the corners planed off should do for ex-battery hens.
Hope this helps
Al

Mine also prefer the nesting boxes, so when I go and lock them up I put a sheet of news paper in each one, then in the morning take it out clean nest box, just pop news paper on compost, saves a lot of cleaning out.
